with a government that is (or was until now) adamantly against making any attempt to curb its profligate use of fossil fuels. This paper argues that the attacks on car
dealerships that sell SUVs is understandable as a form of protest against government inaction; it is also a means of trying to engage ordinary Americans in the fight against the
use of fossil fuels, as well as pointing up the serious threat poised by climate change. It finally argues that the torching of the cars and dealerships cannot be labeled
precisely, because it doesnt fit into any single "category." Using quotations from the material and observation, it argues that these actions, which comprise arson and destruction of private property, are
criminal and should first be considered from that standpoint. But it also argues that even those targeted have a degree of sympathy with the perpetrators, which makes it difficult to
condemn them completely. Finally, it argues that there is a degree of terrorism involved, but not terrorism in the sense it is usually understood today. That being the case, these
acts dont fit easily anywhere, and have to be considered "something else," perhaps "illegal acts done in the name of justice" or something similar. The essay will explore these ideas
