paper has proven unexpectedly difficult. Hours of searching using various combinations of the words "terrorist," "terrorist organization," "torture" and "hostages" has not yielded much, except a general observation that at
the moment, most of the discussion seems to be centered on the U.S. military personnel and their treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib in Iraq. There can
be no doubt that Americans have tortured their prisoners; perhaps it is because Americans in general cannot conceive of any other American using these tactics that makes them so shocking.
At any rate, the American use of torture must also be discussed here. Its probably fair to say that the prompt, the methods of torture terrorists use on their hostages,
immediately makes most people think of Al-Qaeda and other Middle Eastern groups who have taken hostages. The 9/11 attack has left most people with the perception that any organization in
the Middle East is, or has ties to, terrorists, making objective observation difficult. But terrorism occurs in all countries; in Russia, Chechen rebels murdered several hostages before their siege ended
horribly (Edwards, 2009). It should also be noted that what some consider terrorist acts, others consider brave bids for freedom. Finally, the definition of torture has been muddied in recent
years, mostly by the Bush Administrations splitting of the concept into two parts: torture and what is called "torture lite," meaning acts that are designed to extract information but are
not as heinous as traditional torture. Those who have suffered under torture lite fail to see the difference; that must also be discussed. As noted above, torture is not purely
