Lars Tornstam, a Swedish professor of sociology, has provided a new conceptualization of aging, as this theory perceives human development as an ongoing process that extends into old age and
a structure for characterizing the features of positive aging (Wadensten, 2007). Traditionally, old age has been equated with the acquisition of wisdom and Tornstam describes the features of the aging
process that facilitate the attainment of wisdom, which he relates to the signs of gerotranscendence (Wadensten, 2007). Tornstam pictures gerotranscendence as a natural development process that occurs within the
lives of everyone, as they transition through the various stages in life and draws upon Jungs theoretical model of the individuation process (Wadensten, 2007). In other words, the theory assumes
that individuals are predisposed to progress throughout their lifetimes toward the goals of maturity and wisdom (Wadensten, 2007). Tornstam uses the term gerotranscendence to describe this progression as well as
the final stage, in which wisdom is achieved (Wadensten, 2007). There are signs that characterize the progression towards gerotranscendence, which generally indicate a progression from a materialistically based worldview
towards a more cosmic, transcendental perception of reality. Tornstam describes these signs as occurring within three dimensions. The first of which is the "cosmic dimension of transcendence" (Wadensten, 2007, p.
