changes in consciousness. For example, people were more open in the twentieth century to different ideas than they were during the Enlightenment era centuries ago. Three major figures in
the history of sociology are Max Weber, Emile Durkheim and Karl Marx. These three men shared similarities as they each contributed something to classical sociology that can be embraced today.
Their work permeates the boundaries of time and place. For example, Marxs alienation can be seen in the eyes of the Wal Mart clerk and Webers anomie--a similar concept--is exemplified
in the recent school shootings. Webers ideas too are seen in modern times. While Webers bureaucratic model was more relevant to the monstrosity of the New Jersey Department of Motor
Vehicles in the 1980s and the New York City Board of Education in the 1970s, certainly his concepts are still applicable today. In general, sociologists employ a variety of methods
of research to purportedly produce objective knowledge. However, sociology is not a pure science and there does not seem to be objective findings as would be discovered in chemistry or
biology for example. The reason why this is the case, is because one cannot conclusively prove that a trend exists or not because social science does not deal in absolutes,
only tendencies and intangibles. Mainstream American sociology has long been the target of criticism as some say that sociology is not, cannot, and should not be free of values (Smith,
