practitioners frequently engage in specialization in order to better serve the diverse needs of diverse populations. However, a recent trend has occurred wherein an intentional absence of specialization that focuses
on having the flexibility to provide meaningful social work care to as many elements of a population as possible has become highly valued. This "anti-specialization" is referred to as advanced
generalist practice, and emphasizes "multidimensional problem-setting, self-reflective leadership, and ethical advocacy" (Lavitt, 2009). This approach to social work practice has been positively indicated in a rural setting, perhaps due
to the need for social workers in such regional settings to have access to a wide array of adaptive skillsets in order to understand and provide meaningful support to diverse
populations outside of the typical urban or suburban centers (Lohmann & Lohmann, 2008). Advanced generalist social workers in a rural setting need to cultivate useful skills in areas such as
marriage and family therapy, participating in and appreciating the nuances of rural lifestyles, as well as the utilization of "formal and informal community resources" (Lohmann & Lohmann, 2008). A "generalist
with a nonspecialization foundation", in other words, an advanced generalist, may well be the best approach a social worker can take if he or she wants to provide care in
a rural context. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Social Functioning When social workers attempt to help patients regain some degree of lost social function, they must necessary engage
with some sort of theoretical framework that guides the direction of their social work practice. For instance, when attempting to improve social function, a social worker might adopt the cognitive
