girls are incredibly different and live in very different households, which makes them powerful friends until a disaster befalls them both and slowly separates them. Within this novel there are
aspects of morality and moral ambiguity. The following paper examines these issues and concerns. Toni Morrisons Sula: Moral Ambiguity One of the most obvious elements in the novel
that concerns morality revolves around Sula, along with her mother and grandmother. Her family is seen as being essentially immoral for Sulas mother is a woman who loves to entertain
men and get from them what she can. Sula, in her later years, also develops the same sort of attitude towards men and her sexuality. In the small town this
is clearly seen as immoral and wrong. But, for Sula, as well as her family, it was nothing more than a necessary part of life. Just because these women
stepped outside the norms, the moral norms expected, of the society did not make them immoral people and many may argue that this sexuality was a form of moral ambiguity
when, in fact, it was nothing more than part of their identity and their ability, and need, to survive. They did not see their behavior as immoral, which made it,
to the community, a clear case of moral ambiguity wherein Sula and her family felt they had a right and that their behavior was, or should be, acceptable. But, for
the townspeople they actually went so far as to see Sulas apparent moral ambiguity as a foundation for their perceived notion of their own morality and goodness: "Their conviction of
