Her daughter-in-law, Sethe, never found strength in her past experiences, but spent the rest of her life after escaping slavery still running from the memory and "beating down the past". Her lover later in life, Paul D. assumed a similar stance when it came to the remembrance of things past. He never was able to stay in one place for long, for as soon as his surroundings became familiar, he would find him self filled with agitation and the burden of disremembered things swelling his mind. Baby Suggs was clotted with slave-memories of babies she never saw grow up, men who were given in marriage and then sold a year later, and children to whom she never had the chance to say goodbye. She finally felt worthy because of her perfect son, Halle, Sethes husband. He had worked for her freedom because he pitied the way her hip hurt and felt compassion at all the things she had been forced to endure. She took the worth he gave her and spread it to her "congregation" after she was a free woman. While they were feeling the freedom of loving themselves, they were growing in their own appreciation of each other and placing a new value upon themselves-a value taken away by the white masters they served. But Baby Suggs couldnt keep it together, and what she finally had as her own she gave away. The self-worth she preached was gone along with any hope and even any caring as she lay dying.
