Nel, form the focal point for this narrative and it is around this duo that other relationships revolve. Sula comes to represent evil and social alienation. Nel, on the
other hand, becomes a perfect example of social propriety. This is the evaluation that society has determined for these women. However, from the beginning of the novel, Morrison has
made it clear that the two characters are fused on a basic level. Through her portrayal of Sula and Nels relationship she demonstrates the very Eastern idea that good and
evil are but two sides of the same coin. In Sula, there are many issues that Morrison depicts in terms of diametrically opposed values and terms (Page 62). Morrison
contrasts the present with the past, female roles against male (Page 62). Various families in the "Bottom", e.g. the Wrights and Greenes, provide the quintessential example of social conformity while
t he Peaces represent individual freedom (Page 62). Nel and Sula, within this environment that abounds with dichotomies, become a study of the meaning of good and evil (Page 62).
Directly through this pair of characters, Morrison addresses moral values that are traditionally associated with extremes of sexual behavior"monogamy and promiscuity. The plot of Sula deals with the lives of
these two opposed characters, The novel opens at the time when the girls were around the age of twelve. At this point, just when their adolescent identifies are starting to
form, there is a traumatic event. While playing with a young black boy next to a river, the child is accidentally drowned. Sulas hands slipped while she was swinging him
in an innocent game. She feels responsible. Nel takes comfort in the fact that she didnt really "do anything." Yet, the way that both girls react to this event
