to have been born on November 12, 1651 in San Miguel, Nepantla, Mexico (Irving 1) and she died on April 17, 1695 in Mexico city (Piepke 1). The following examination
of her works focuses on her tone and style, after offering a brief description of her life so that her writing can be viewed in the context of her life
and era. Her life One of six illegitimate children, her father apparently deserted the family when Juana was quite young and she was soon sent to be reared within
the household of her maternal grandfather, where she had access to a library and subsequently learned to read by the age of three (Piepke 1). She composed her first dramatic
poem by age eight. Juana soaked up instruction so quickly that she mastered Latin in only twenty lessons (Piepke 1). When she was sixteen, Juana was sent to the
viceroys court, to serve as a lady in waiting to the viceroys wife (Piepke 1). She soon became a favorite of the viceroy, with whom she shared a love of
learning. A strikingly beautiful woman, Juana was never attracted to the idea of marriage, and she was, rather, attracted to intellectual pursuit, so she chose in 1667 to enter the
Convent of the Discalced Carmelites; however, this order proved to be too severe for her, as she became ill and left within three months (Piepke 1). She took the veil
and became a sister at the Convent of Saint Jerome on February 24, 1669, where she remained for the rest of her life (Piepke 2). As a nun, Sor Juana
was able to continue her studies and she wrote extensively for the remains of her life. Her works include come dramas and non-fiction, but primarily consists of poetry. Poetry
