Tomlinson (1999) writes about culture within the realm of globalization by first defining the concepts. In his book appropriately titled Globalization and Culture, there is the sense that global methods
of doing business is intertwined with culture. The author addresses a variety of topics which is introduced and detailed in the chapter entitled "Culture as a Dimension of Globalization." In
this chapter, he addresses the ideas of culture and globalization separately and asks how one may see them as interrelated. The answer is that culture may be thought of as
a part or dimension of globalization. By expressing this point, the author by no means intends to simplify the matter. Rather, Tomlinson (1999) is clear that globalizing phenomena are very
complex. They are multidimensional and puts pressure "on the conceptual frameworks by which we have traditionally grasped the social world" (Tomlinson, 1999, p.14). The fact that these things are complicated,
and that there is no clear causal relationship between globalization and culture, suggests that there is no doubt that an intense relationship exists. The author make that clear. Also, as
Tomlinson delves into works by Hirst and Thompson, and other authors, many ideas are gleaned. It is noted for example that without understanding or possessing a global economy, many other
things taken for granted would cease or at least be less threatening (Tomlinson, 1999). Here, what is accentuated is the fact that the global economy and its effects are strong.
