The message itself is not new, it is one that contradicts the ideas of Taylor and is supported by work of theorists such as Mayo, Maslow and Hertzberg. However, it may also be argued that in some instances employees may not be best suited with his approach and an instrumental approach maybe observed. 1. Introduction Motivating employees can be valuable for a firm, with a range of differing motivating theories indicates both tangible and intangible benefits for both the employer and the employee. The approaches taken by many companies will be multifaceted, involving a number of strategies. It is under a multifaceted strategy that motivational speakers have been utilized, often seen at sales or group meetings with the idea of brining in an outside influence to help increase or improve motivation. There are a wide number of motivational speakers, many of whom produce tapes as well as making personal appearances. Tom Peters is an interesting speaker who takes a very people centric approach to motivation arguing that too much attention has been paid to processes and insufficient attention paid to the people the processes are aimed at managing. Therefore we may argue that there is an inherent approach within Peters theories which embrace the human relations school of thought. 2.
