At least two films have been made of it, one very recent and one in the 1960s that launched the career of Albert Finney. This paper considers one
of the detailed episodes in the book, the tale of the Man of the Hill; why Fielding included it; what it suggests about the novel itself; what it contributes to
the growth of the hero; and how the novel would be different without it. Discussion The story of the Man of the Hill is, at bottom, a tale
of redemption. The old man who tells the story to Tom Jones and Toms companion Partridge is a detailed observation of the evil that can befall a young man,
and the way in which circumstances seem to combine to punish him. Perhaps the most telling part of the story is the fact that the Man steals his friends
money; years later, he and his friend are unexpectedly reunited, whereupon the friend betrays him and has him arrested. The lesson is clear: crime deserves retribution, even if
it is long in coming. Why would Fielding have included this story? Probably because it so closely parallels Toms own tale, or rather, how Tom might have behaved if
he were truly the evil person hes believed to be. In the Man of the Hill we can see glimpses of Tom as he would have been if hed
been base or mean. Tom is a trickster and something of a rake-he has a weakness for women-but hes not a thief or liar, and many of his problems
