(Marchetti and Brewer 118). Chappell, as well as others such as Kouzes and Posner, believe that business should exemplify servant leadership, to their communities, their customers and the environment. Chappell
has said that the first responsibility of business if "to the environment, the community and one another" and that if these responsibilities are met, then task of making a profit
can be addressed (Marchetti and Brew 118). Shared Vision : Toms of Maine began as a shared vision between Chappell and his wife Kate, who envisioned selling all natural
products as an alternative to the chemical-laden, artificial ones that are predominant in most markets (McLain 64). The core of Chappells vision remains the same and consists of respect for
the environment, and respect for the customer. He writes that "Our relations to our customers was one of respect. Our first customers had been our family and friends. We were
not in business to maximize profits by cheating our customers or skimping on quality" (11). As the company grew and the vision was shared with others, the focus remained on
service rather than on profit. Chappell has indicated that he wants his managers "to know that there are alternatives to plotting business strategy according only to how much profit
will result" (Chappell 11). Challenging the Process : Chappell, in his text The Soul of Business, admits that while he never abandoned his dedication to product quality, natural ingredients
