Ivan exclaims that his family should just leave him alone and let him die in peace. Tolstoy writes: "She would have gone away but at that moment their daughter came
in and went up to say good morning to him. He looked at his daughter as he had looked at his wife, and in reply to her inquiry about his
health said coldly that he would very soon relieve them all of his presence" (156). Ivan is a bitter man. After he finds out he is dying, he does at
first at least try to confirm the diagnosis. Throughout the work, one sees that Ivan is in part somewhat hopeful that he can make a recovery, but his hopes soon
fade as his health deteriorates. According to a student, one criticism of this story is as follows: "The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a powerful but false analysis of human
experience". The question is, is the comment valid? Certainly, it seems that while the work is truly compelling, it is not typical. For the most part, it appears that people
who are dying tend to become close to their families. It is true that in some cases, there will be bitterness. In fact, one part of the dying process involves
anger. However, in this case, Ivan is seemingly too extreme for his behavior to be explained away by the fact that he is going through a normal process. Also, it
appears that while Ivans personality does change a bit, his negativity is there most of the time. The diagnosis only makes his relationships strained more than it might have been.
