interpreted as an inclination toward communism. Tolstoy defined his interest as being in "political economy and socialistic works" as derived from reading John Stuart Mill. Like Marx and
Engels, Tolstoy portrays Levin as being very specific about the individual being of greater importance in the government structure than the structure itself. As exploitation of one individual by
another decreases, it was thought, the exploitation of one nation by another would also decrease (Marx and Engels, 1998). It was a vision of the future that harkened the
concept of globalization. The distinction that Levin worried over, that the labor of the newly freed serf would be able to be combined with the vast agricultural opportunities
of the land for the purpose of the common good, was also observed by Marx and Engels and disregarded in terms of "the modern laborer" or capitalistic economic structure as
losing the sense of autonomy (1998, p. 25). The socialization or acculturation process engages the individual on two levels: the organization of social relationships and the distribution of resources
based on such distinctions as status and roles. Norms and values may be detached from traditions and conventions of everyday life, resulting in a situation in which moral distinctions
are made. Levin believed that the sacred nature of all living things demanded that mankind re-vision the current belief to see that man is but a component of
an unknowable system that has no beginning and no end. The common thread that unites humanity with nature, and connects mankind to the divine, is the inclination toward a
future perfectibility, that is, the processes of evolution. His inability to see the future as this type of evolutionary development drove him to seek an end to his own
