also represents his eventual goal. Tolstoy, as an aristocrat living in the nineteenth century, was deeply concerned about the plight of the Russian peasantry, the serfs. The Cossacks
was published in 1863 and, with great richness in its tone and imagery, shows what the life of the serfs could be like if they were not born into a
form of slavery, as all serfs were considered to be the chattel of their landlords. The Cossacks were not that much more affluent than the serfs, yet this freedom-loving, bold
people -- who had never been under the oppressive thumb of serfdom -- provided a sharp contrast to the downtrodden serfs. Where the typical serf was groveling and subservient, the
Cossack rode proud, the epitome of a highly trained fierce warrior, used to the dangers of a wild country. In essence, Tolstoy is saying in this novella, by way
of contrast, that it is freedom that makes the difference in a man, freedom and experience, not class or social status. Tolstoy pictures the Cossacks as living an almost
