by people of good position and that [do] not regard them as wrong" (Ibsen 1417 [emphasis added]). Over time, the character generally accepts the construct of the good society,
even though the soul searching for meaning wrestles with its own disgust at the construct. However, in Leo Tolstoys The Death of Ivan Ilych and Henry Ibsens A Doll
House, the authors make it clear that there are other societies, and that while the protagonists move within that society, they are not a part of it. Still, even
the protagonist who resides outside the best society will accept that he or she has lived life as best as possible within the construct. Even when the protagonist leaves
the best society, the character has performed within the framework of the best society. The definition of the best society is based
on two premises: living within the social order or living outside of it. Social order requires Ibsens Nora to protect her husband at the expense of herself.
She is disgusted by the fact that she must respond to the blackmailer, but also proud that she has defended her husband and her livelihood from defeat by the aberration.
She has walked the line of the social order, becoming a wife and taking care of the responsibilities of that duty, and because she has been responsible to her
duty, the problem with the social order resides outside herself and her construct. It is the blackmailer who is wrong. It is the blackmailer who is outside the
