importance of society to everyday life, Tolstoy also contrasts the differing expectations of society in regards male and female behavior. This focus is evident from the first page and the
first passage in the novel sets the stage for themes that will come. Tolstoy emphasizes the importance of his first sentence by placing in a paragraph by itself. It reads:
"All happy families are alike: each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way" (Tolstoy 1). With this sentence, Tolstoy conveys immediately to his readers that the novel will focus
on unhappy families and their stories. The passage introduces the Oblonsky family, which in a state of "confusion," as Dolly Oblonsky has recently discovered that her husband has been having
an affair with their childrens former French governess. This discovery has caused Dolly to announce that she cannot live in the same house with her husband and has refused to
leave her rooms for three days. The unfaithful husband has largely remained absent from the home, which leaves the remainder of the household in chaos. The children run around the
house "as if lost"; the current English governess has quarreled with the housekeeper and is considering resigning; the cook has already resigned; and the kitchen maid and the coachman have
given notice (Tolstoy 1). As this illustrates, this opening passage accomplishes several purposes. It immediately announces the basic focus of the novel, which is on marriage and family live,
and the centrality of these subjects to societal structure. Stiva Oblonskys infidelity does not simply affect himself and his wife, but their entire household. The underlying theme of the novel
