Making and Unmaking of the New Left, provides an in-depth analysis of the news media and its effect on world events and individuals. This book seeks to delve into
the "truth" of media reporting, by examining the focus of the media in relation to the results achieved through their coverage. By carefully examining activist movements, this book is
able to provide excellent insights into this subject, and the author is able to instill for readers the message of the importance of critically examining the media and their influence.
Gitlin determines and illustrates in this book how the news media ignored many important political developments in the anti-war era.
Furthermore, he contends that the media selectively reported on incidents, capitalizing upon the extreme characteristics of stories in order to sensationalize them. Gitlin asserts that this askew vision had
many significant ramifications. For instance, there were many leaders who became literally celebrities overnight, based upon their extensive media coverage. Another significant concern of Gitlins is in regards
to the messages themselves, which were often perceived to be the only views on the matter given the narrow focus of media coverage. These factors often led to the
destabilization of the movement, while simultaneously promoting moderate alternatives. In the end, Gitlin asserts that media news coverage in the anti-war
era provides an example of everything that is not democratic, and clearly this is in conflict with the founding principles of this country. This concerns Gitlin significantly. He
