the other. As more and more children are the product of shattered families, dreams of a democratic society based on individuality and a good work ethic fade. In fact, as
time goes on the society continues to crumble. Many children have two homes and step-siblings. Compared to the traditional, intact family where church is every Sunday morning and families have
meals together, this new paradigm is close to unrecognizable--or would be for time travelers from the nineteenth century. The new family is reality and it is often void of
serious religious practices. While perhaps belief in religion is not really the point, the fact that many people have gotten away from other activities such as those associated with social
clubs and scouting organizations and replaced them with classes and shopping trips attests to the growth of a consumer society. This in and of itself would not be bad, but
along with the phenomenon is a total embrace of pop culture and a decline in religion. Enter Alexis de Tocqueville and his theories. About a hundred seventy years ago or
so this great European historian appeared to talk about the virtues of American life. He claimed in his "Democracy in America," that civic associations, not specifically political in nature, but
replete with meaning, should be required (Smidt 176). That statement is rather strong but Tocqueville did not mean that the government should become involved with such functions. Rather, he believed
that civic associations were necessary for the good of society. In other words, without it, America would fail. And indeed, that seems to be the case. Not only is
