recent years, new products such as the nicotine patches and nicotine gum have helped people to quit, but there are still many people who have not stopped smoking. It is
important to explore tobacco and health because while there has been many frightening tales, there are also cases where individuals live to be very old and have smoked most of
their lives. There are also people with lung cancer-a cancer thought to be caused predominantly by cigarette smoking-who have never smoked. It is hard to explain how this happens and
so it is important to look at research on the subject. What is the latest research on tobacco and health? One study done in England after a smoke free work
environment was initiated found that the staff members that did not smoke had four times less cotinine in their blood than they did before the ban ("Smoking ban: Immediate effect
on workers health," 2007). Cotinine is found in nicotine ("Smoking ban: Immediate effect on workers health," 2007). Clearly, second hand smoke is an issue so when examining the problem of
smoking research and its dangers, whether or not a certain substance stays in ones body is certainly relevant. Further, second hand smoking is still similar to smoking. Authors of the
study report: " The researchers also calculated that on average, employee exposure was the equivalent to smoking 190 cigarettes a year before the legislation, and around 44 cigarettes after" ("Smoking
ban: Immediate effect on workers health," 2007). Hence, after a ban was placed on cigarette smoking inside certain facilities, it was as if there was a reduction in smoking. It
