Tobacco should be regarded as one of the most dangerous drugs currently being utilized in contemporary society. Its impacts to human health might far exceed the impacts rendered by comparable illegal drugs. Those impacts are, in fact, astronomical. Tobacco, however, is not only easily obtained, it is perfectly legal. Cigarettes can be bought at the corner grocery store and in practically every other retail outlet. The intent of this paper is to discuss the health impacts of tobacco and to frame those impacts against the health impacts presented by marijuana and methamphetamines. The argument will be made that cigarettes should be relegated, either formally or informally, to the same status as an illegal drug. One of the more commonly used illegal drugs is marijuana. Interestingly, there is little in terms of scientific research documenting the health impacts of marijuana. Marijuanas relative safety has been used as a justification for the push towards legalization as has such things as law enforcement resource balancing. The relative safety of marijuana is something that its advocates have pointed to for decades. They contend that it is one of the worlds least toxic compounds and, compared to tobacco in particular, has few pulmonary risks.
