is a habit that is more than expensive or offense to some, it is also life-threatening. There is now sufficient evidence to link smoking to lung cancer. While there are
many smokers who live to advanced ages, there are also those who are cut down by a completely preventable disease; they have chosen to smoke, taken the risk they might
have problems, and lost the gamble. But this points up a very important fact: no one is being forced to smoke. There are no laws on the books that say
anyone must smoke or face fines or jail time. Given that smoking is neither a crime nor a mandated behavior but a personal choice, it is difficult to directly connect
tobacco legislation with an addiction to tobacco. That means that legislation about tobacco will not affect non-smokers, leaving an entire population segment out of the discussion and calling its validity
into question. That is, how can we talk about the effect of legislation on a particular outcome if the legislation does not apply to everyone equally? It seems more logical
to first see what tobacco legislation is, and whether or not any of that legislation has encouraged smoking, thus leading to addiction. Even then it should be remembered that not
all smokers become addicted; some are able to quit easily and never take up the habit again. This is not the general rule, but again, it is sufficiently important that
we have to take it into consideration. We begin with a general search for "tobacco legislation" and take the articles in no particular order. (The sources are from an academic
