promotes nonsmoking policies across the globe and the United States supports that policy. These are exactly the reasons many Congressmen and Senators oppose exporting tobacco leaves and cigarette. Business and
ethics do not necessarily meld, however. Despite ones personal feelings surrounding the issue and what is or is not ethical and moral, it is important to look at cold, hard
facts. The first fact being that the countries buying U.S. tobacco do not discourage cigarette smoking or other uses of tobacco. In fact, the industry represents a significant part of
their economy. The question as to the United States government should or should not support and even sponsor the exporting of tobacco and
tobacco products is not a simple one, however. There are significant ethical and moral questions on each side of the argument. For the time being, at least, exporting tobacco products
needs to continue and the government should continue to aid in that process in terms of assuring there is no discrimination or unfair trade barriers imposed by other countries on
U.S. tobacco. The tobacco industry is also a significant part of the U.S. economy as well. With 21 States and more than 2
million people involved in the growing, production and marketing of tobacco, it reflects an enormous industry within the nation. As the 6th largest cash crop, it accounts for millions and
