that American Indians were using tobacco in both medicinal and religious practices in 1 B.C. (Randall, 1999). It was used almost as a cure-all for dressing wounds and relieving pain (Randall, 1999). It was believed that chewing tobacco could reduce the pain of a toothache (Randall, 1999). The first archeological artifacts providing evidence of early use of tobacco were the pictures on Guatemalan pottery dating back to 600-1000 A.D. (ASH, 2006). In October 1492, Columbus was offered dried tobacco leaves as a gift from the Native Americans he met (Randall, 1999). It wasnt long before sailors brought tobacco back to Europe and its popularity as a crop quickly spread (Randall, 1999). Two other explorers contributed to the rise of growing and using tobacco - Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres, Spanish explorers, smoked the tobacco and took that habit back to Spain (ASH, 2006). Early cultivation of tobacco is recorded in Santo Domingo in 1531 and in Portugal in 1548 (ASH, 2006). There are reports of a doctor in Seville promoting the benefits of tobacco to all Spanish doctors in 1571 (ASH, 2006). The following year, Sir Francis Drake returned home and introduced pipe smoking in Britain (ASH, 2006). The use of tobacco continued to be used for any number of physical ailments, including halitosis and lockjaw throughout Europe (ASH, 2006; Randall, 1999). Sir Frances Drake introduced smoking to Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585 (ASH, 2006). Tobacco became so popular in the 1600s, it was used as money (Randall, 1999). It was also in the early 1600s that Sir Frances Bacon reported it was very difficult to stop the habit of smoking (ASH, 2006; Randall, 1999).
