16% of the population smokes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1997). In Kentucky this number is considerably higher, an estimated 32% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1997).
The average percentage of smokers in the United States is 23.6% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1997). The health impacts of smoking include not only direct impacts
but also indirect impacts. Smoking has the potential to not only affect smokers themselves but also those that come into contact with the smoke of others.
The health impacts of smoking include lung cancer, osteoporosis, emphysema, bronchitis, as well as several less publicly acknowledge health impacts. Smoking contributes, in fact,
not only to the conditions noted above but also to cervical cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases. Tobacco is of particular threat to women and adolescents (Berkley Wellness
Letter, 2001). Indeed, the Task Force for Tobacco-Free Women and Girls (2001) reveals that each year in America alone:
"tobacco kills more than 125,000 American women, mostly through cigarette-induced heart disease, lung cancer, and other lung diseases. In 1987, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer
