to find ways in which to entice people through advertising and the youth market, or young adult market, is perhaps one of the largest targets of the tobacco industry. The
following paper examines how the tobacco industrys advertising aims itself at the young adult market and how it affects the smoking choices made by youth. Tobacco Advertising and
Youth While much of the tobacco advertising has disappeared over the past few decades it is still a prominent part of the tactics
used by the tobacco industry. There was a law passed over a decade ago that was supposed to stop the targeting of children in relationship to advertising. As one author
notes, "As part of the 1998 state tobacco settlement, the tobacco companies promised not to "take any action, directly or indirectly, to target youth" (Tobacco Free Youth, 2003). However, it
seems that the industry has continued to find ways to focus on the youth for it is believed that the youth is the most powerful market for that industry.
In another article an author indicates that in order for the industry to survive they have to "replace those who quit or die with
new young consumers...It does this by creating a complex tobacco marketing net that ensnares millions of young people worldwide, with potentially devastating health consequences" (AllBusiness.com, 2008). Despite the laws it
seems that the young adults in the nation can view allusive messages and advertisements in a variety of areas. For example, the tobacco industry utilizes fashion magazines, music, the internet
