a large role in American society. Not only is a significant percentage of our population addicted to tobacco, the industry provides jobs for countless others and wields phenomenal political
power. One aspect of this power has targeted women. In addition to its adverse impact on the health of adult women, smoking can be contended to be one
of the most concerning correlants to adolescent health. The health impacts of tobacco use are a proven fact. Smoking is the most significant link between osteoporosis and lung
cancer. It is a major contributor to other lung diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis as well. Smoking contributes, in fact, not only to these conditions but
also to cervical cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases. Indeed, the Task Force for Tobacco-Free Women and Girls (2001, PG) reveals that each year in America alone:
"tobacco kills more than 125,000 American women, mostly through cigarette-induced heart disease, lung cancer, and other
lung diseases. In 1987, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the leading killer of women"
Unethical advertising campaigns by big tobacco companies, however, have been implicated as being designed to lure younger and younger individual of our society to the addictive hold of tobacco.
In short, the tobacco industry has been guilty of trying to beef up their customer base by concentrating on those sections of the population who have previously been less likely
to smoke. Women and young girls are among the most aggressively targeted in recent campaigns. The following thesis can, in fact, be presented:
