is mans way of attempting to live and progress harmoniously with his surrounding environment without imparting anymore damage or destruction. While this approach has been successful in bringing the
environment into mainstream development thinking, critics contend such hindsight efforts are too little too late. Before the concept of sustainable development was widely
accepted, mainstream development thinking was basically an attitude of us against them. For as long as there has been land to exploit, there has also been a war raging
between developers and environmentalists (Sen, 2000). Indeed, the battle that exists is one that claims to benefit both sides of the issue: the developers for the people and the
environmentalists for the land and its resources. According to the land developers, mankind has a right to use this planet in any way that promotes his own health and
welfare; however, from the environmentalists point of view, humanity has damaged and consumed so much of the environment already that severe modifications must be made if there is to be
an environment left for future generations (Hibbard et al, 2000). There is no question how the notion of environmental sustainability represents a contradiction in terms for author Michael Tobias, being
