relationship to transformation and exile in Shakespeares The Tempest and Isak Dinesens The Tempests. To Suffer a Sea Change The fuller statement, as seen in Shakespeare, involved the
magical being Ariel and her singing, invisible, to Ferdinand who fears his father was drowned in the storm. Ariel sings of how his father is transformed, how, "Nothing of him
that doth fade But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange" (Shakespeare I ii). Now anyone familiar with the play knows that he is not dead and as
such Ariel clearly speaks of some transformation, while perhaps Ferdinand believes his father is, in a sense, in exile in death. Putting aside the literal reference of the text
one can see how a sea change, in Shakespeares work, is something very detailed and involves perhaps all of the characters. With the imposed, magical, storm that wrecked the ship
and left these men on Prosperos island Prospero will be pulled out of exile, on the island, and many others will be transformed. Prospero desire revenge and utilizes Ariel to
impose magic and enchantment to seek his revenge. But, in the end he forgives those who put him on the island and he suffers a sea change, transforming into a
humble man and thus being released from exile. His daughter Miranda also suffers, or experiences, a sea change as the storm brought to her a man she falls in love
