in a classroom setting. Suggestions and background for the development of a lesson plan are included. The Movie - To Sir with Love (1967). Sydney Poitier, plays the character
of Mark Thackaray, an out of work engineer who reluctantly takes up teaching to pay the bills. He is teaching, what we today, in politically-correct-speak would call socially and economically
disadvantaged, kids of Londons East End, in a school that is considered a "dead- end" for both students and teachers. Certainly things do not
begin well, as Thackery has to control himself under the constant harassment of the students. In fact Thackery does not "loose it" until the students burn a girls used
sanitary pad in class. It is only when he decides to throw away the textbooks, that he starts building trust and making inroads with his rowdy and undisciplined students.
He chooses instead, to teach them how to be adults, first with courtesy and manners, and then on to adult topics such as marriage and life skills like the
way to get a job and keep it. By treating the kids as adults and giving respect, he begins to get it back in turn, along with at least
one schoolgirl crush. "Sir", as he comes to be known, becomes popular both in the school and in the community; where the parents feel that he has gone above and
