Harper Lees "To Kill A Mockingbird" stands as a permanent memorial to the times of racial tension and discord
which once characterized our country. Central to the message conveyed in the novel is its location in Maycomb Alabama. Maycomb stands as a symbolic representation of the South
as a whole. Even it geographic location within the state, in fact, conveys this symbolic representation. The diversity of opinions and beliefs expressed by the people that live
in Maycomb is critical to this symbolic representation as well. Interestingly, Lee chooses children and the theme of loneliness as well to convey his deep societal message. The
purpose of this paper is to discuss each of these three themes (Maycomb, children, and loneliness) and to illuminate Lees potential reasons for using them.
Maycomb as a Setting The first task before us is to discuss the
significance of Maycomb Alabama as a setting for "To Kill a Mocking Bird". Maycomb is located about halfway between Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. It could be contended that even
the geographical location of Maycomb is a critical element in Lees plot. Montgomery, the state, capital stands as a symbol of Alabama society as it was in the thirties
while Tuscaloosa, soon to be the home of one of the most widely recognized institutions of education for blacks in the world, stands as a symbol of what could be.
