they knew he was innocent, the town of Maycomb, Alabama, is guilty of his murder. Discussion The plot is easy to summarize, but the flavor of the novel is not
so quickly captured. The moral center of the book is Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the small town of Maycomb; the book is narrated by his daughter, a tomboy known
as "Scout" (Lee). Her brother Jem completes the family; Atticus lost his wife and is raising the children alone (Lee). The central conflict of the book arises when Atticus, who
is white, agrees to defend Tom Robinson, who is black, when Tom is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell (Lee). Atticus is a fine attorney and he builds
a skillful defense, and as facts are brought to light, it soon becomes apparent that Tom is innocent of the crime of which hes accused (Lee). Its not some legal
technicality-Tom is innocent and everyone knows it; still, the white jury convicts him as Atticus and the black townspeople look on helplessly (Lee). Tom is convicted for only one reason:
hes black. Although hes sentenced to death, the sentence is commuted to life in prison; even so, Tom cant stand it, tries to escape and is shot down (Lee). Thus
a innocent man dies because of the color of his skin. The main characters who are what we might call on the "side of right" are Atticus Finch and his
children Jem and Scout; Tom Robinson; "Dill" Harris, Scouts "boyfriend"; the Finches cook Calpurnia, who is a surrogate mother to the children, who adore her; "Boo" Radley, a reclusive person
