His Coy Mistress and Porphyrias Lover is, of course, that Marvells persona is a seducer, whereas Brownings is a murderer. Certainly, both poems deal with similar themes - love, sexuality,
death, the nature of time and the need to "seize the moment" - but the two lovers approach these themes from very different perspectives.
The lover in Marvells poem has no intention of harming his mistress, even if such harm could be presented and rationalised as a form of love. It would be fair
to argue that he is aware of the social "harm" which might result if his mistress succumbs to his desires - after all, her rejection of his advances is presumably
derived from her wish to conform to the societal mores of the time - but he is a civilised and sophisticated lover, who regards love and seduction as something of
a game. Despite his determination which he brings to bear in his attempts to persuade the woman, we cannot envisage him resorting to the kind of desperate violence which Brownings
protagonist demonstrates. Such an action would be, in his view, far too crude and primitive in comparison to the subtle and carefully-phrased persuasive arguments which
he presents. Essentially, he wants his mistress to accept his advances not because she has been mentally or physically bludgeoned into doing so, but because she understands, and willingly accepts,
his rationalisation of the situation. He is impatient, it is true, stating that his mistresss coyness might be less aggravating if they had centuries
ahead of them in which to play such games; were that the case, he would happily spend years on end in praising her various attributes and worshipping, as it were,
