Signed into law on May 27, 1975 but originated in 1972, the law, which prohibits sexual discrimination at publicly funded institutions, afforded myriad opportunities for the female gender to overcome typical patriarchal barriers inherent to the sports world. By providing access to such sports as soccer, basketball, baseball, etc., Title IX helped to bridge an ever-widening gap that has historically made it tremendously difficult - if not downright impossible - to break through the male-dominated arena. Because of the existence of Title IX, the 1996 U.S. national soccer team "captured the first-ever womens Olympic medal in this sport before a crowd of 76,481, and in doing so established its position as the worlds premier womens soccer program" (Anonymous, 1997). However, even with the outstanding results inherent to Title IX, it has come to light that the testing procedures should be modified from its current three-part method in order to provide a more unbiased approach to the equitable nature of qualification. Based upon President Fords original policy, regulations specific to the law include: * School systems or other recipients of federal funds must designate at least one employee as the Title IX coordinator to oversee compliance efforts and investigate any complaints of sex discrimination * All students and employees must be notified of the names, office address(es), and telephone number(s) of the designated coordinator(s) of Title IX * Grievance procedures and nondiscrimination policies must be made public * Recipient school systems had to perform a one-time self-evaluation, with obligations to modify practices that did not comply with Title IX * School systems may take remedial and affirmative steps to increase the participation of students in programs or activities where bias has occurred (Valentine, 1992, p.
