(Motley and Lavine, 2001, p. 56). The 1960s, however, witnessed a spate of lawsuits, in which women sought equality in collegiate sports. Ultimately, it was the passage of the Education
Amendments of 1972, specifically Title IX of this act, that brought gender equality to sports, as it states that no American shall "on the basis of sex, be excluded from
participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance" (Motley and Lavine, 2001, p. 56). There was
resistance, but also tremendous growth in the girls and womens athletic programs at both the high school and college level. After a 1984 Supreme Court decision that temporarily negated Title
IXs applicability to college athletics, it was strengthened in the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987, making it clear that compliance was required by all educational institutions receiving any sort
of federal funding (Motley and Lavine, 2001). It should be noted that the wording of Title IX does not mention athletics. It was drafted with the intention of opening
all aspects of educational experience to girls and women. It was passed at the height of the womens movement and its goal was to offer women the same opportunities as
men in regards to receiving a college education, that is, it eliminated limited admissions quotas for female students and offered women a "short at studying engineering, medicine and other fields
in which they had been largely shut out" (Fenoglio, 2001). Senator Birch Bayh (D-Ind.), who lobbied for Title IX, says that "It was not the primary goal to get
