upheaval. This paper briefly discusses some of the trends taking place. Discussion Titian was part of an artistic movement known as the "High Renaissance"; the word "renaissance" itself means "new
birth," and the High Renaissance is the term that indicates the peak of this movement, when some of the greatest artists in history were working (Pioch). This includes Florentines like
Michelangelo and da Vinci; Raphael, who was an Umbrian; and the three great Venetians, Tintoretto, Veronese and Titian (Pioch). Beside a renewal in art, the 16th century was "a
time of unprecedented change. It was the beginning of the modern era, and it saw a revolution in almost every aspect of life" (Iannuzzo). Changes included the discovery, at the
beginning of the century, of a new continent; the spread of the Renaissance northward from Italy across Europe even to England; and great economic growth (Iannuzzo). "The mechanisms of commerce,
systems of international finance, ocean-going trading fleets, an entrepreneurial bourgeoisie, were all building a recognizably capitalist, money-based economy," one which endures to this day (Iannuzzo). Thanks to inventions like
gunpowder, the conduct of war was changing and the military "caste" system was disappearing; the "centralized nation state" was appearing for the first time; and the media was revolutionized by
