Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page research paper/essay that contrasts and compares 2 art works. The word “pieta” is Italian for “pity” and this word has often been applied to Christian art that portrays the Virgin Mary holding the slain body of Christ in her arms. The most famous “Pieta” is the sculpture by Michelangelo; however, roughly 75 years later, the Titian painted his “Pieta,” and it is vastly different from the previous work. This comparison demonstrates that it is not only a difference in mediums and artistic style that makes these two arts works different, but also the vastly different interpretations of the artists. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

master who is renowned for his use of light and color ("Art...Titian"). Titian painted his "Pieta" at a time when Venice was suffering under the threat of the plague. Therefore,
in many ways, the painting is an "ex voto offering, a prayer for the survival of himself and his beloved son, Orazio" ("Art...Titian"). There is a tablet located in the
bottom right-hand corner, propped against a stone lion, which shows Titian and his son praying to the Virgin Mary for their deliverance. Their pleas were not answered. Titian soon succumbed
to a "fever" and Orazio also perished due to the plague ("Art...Titian"). Due to the circumstances, the emotion conveyed by the painting and the dramatic contrast it presents with
Titians other work can be understood, as with this work, the "master of light...plunges into darkness" and "makes deaths night visible" ("Art...Titian"). There are suggestions of light reflected in the
stone canopy that is behind and above the figure of Mary holding the corpse of her son, as well as "flickers of heavenly gold on the half-dome" ("Art...Titian"). However, the
