directed by James Cameron), which were published shortly after the films premiere. Overall, the reviewers are positive in their reception of the film, however, a few tempered their opinions with
a little criticism. The follow examination of these reviews focuses on whether or not the reviewer was unequivocal in praising the film, and, if there was criticism, the precise nature
of what this criticism. In an online review, James Berardinelli describes Titanic and Camerons accomplished as equivalent with providing the audience with time machine that takes viewers back to
the era and allows them to see the decks and interiors of the doomed vessel. While Berardinelli praises the films special effects, he also argues that these alone would not
make this a fine film and he credits the gripping romance between Rose and Jack as being the element that provides the films core. Similarly, Roger Ebert, in the Chicago
Sun-Times, indicates his unequivocal positive perspective on the film. Ebert also praises the films special effects, indicating the way the film opens, which shows the actual wreck of the
ship resting on the ocean floor, sets precisely the right tone for the film, as it is as if the ship is calling for its story to be told. Ebert
relates the basic points of the narrative, including the love story, and admires the way in which the screenplay allows the filmmakers to unobtrusively display their recreation of the ship.
