may be thought of as a pamphlet as opposed to a book, but it is chock full of practical advice for any school teacher. It contains almost twenty sections even though it is just 46 pages long. While informative, the information is encapsulated as little pieces of advice that many be utilized or discarded. The book makes no claims nor prescribes advice be carried out in any particular order. Rather, as the title suggests, these are teaching tips and nothing more. At the same time, sometimes one tip can make a tremendous difference in ones life. For example, someone may look through a diet book ordered in the same haphazard fashion and not really gain a thorough understanding of dieting, but may use one concept such as drinking eight glasses of water per day, or adding three hours of exercise per week, and that will be all that is necessary for weight loss. Similarly, in this book of tips, a teacher may choose to "toss them a red herring" or "put questions in their heads" as noted in the book, and that will make all the difference. The latter suggestion for example is to designed to "stimulate their curiosity" (Magnan, 1990, p.21). Something as simple as that can create an atmosphere in the classroom that is exciting. Unfortunately, in many classrooms today, teachers merely spout simple and mundane rhetoric. Ordinary teaching can render the classroom quite uninteresting and so these tips can be rather practical. What is new and exciting about this book is that it addresses the subject of motivation, something that is all too often glossed over by psychologists and school personnel.
