argued to stand as a personal journey which many people can relate to, but also stand as a novel that speaks to all people and thus involves a universal journey
of man. Bearing these realities, as well as possibilities, in mind the following paper first examines the book from the perspective that is a tale of a personal journey. The
paper then discusses how the novel is also clearly a story which offers us a look at the universal journey of man. Personal Journey First and foremost it
should be realized that more often than not, novels offer the reader a look at the personal opinions and experiences of the author. Authors, however subtly, are always presenting the
reader with their opinions, their perspectives, and, their personal realizations, or journeys. Considering that this novel is about post colonial China, and that Mo is Chinese, clearly indicates that there
are powerful elements in the tale which reflect a very real personal journey of some type. This is clearly indicated by the following: "Born of an English mother and Cantonese
father, raised in Hong Kong and working as a journalist in London, Mr. Mo knows the conflicts from experience" (Anonymous Confucianism in Timothy Mos Sour Sweet sour.html). Aside from
