take advantage of businesses in this manner. In retail stores, employees have been caught stealing jewelry and of course, perhaps the most common form of thievery is in the context
of the cash register. Some employees have found a way to take money from the cash register undiscovered. There are several scams, but cameras, vigilant supervisory observation and talking to
co-workers can to some extent stop this type of theft. There is another form of employee theft that is often overlooked. One may refer to it as time theft. That
is, employees do all sorts of things to avoid work. They may take long breaks. Perhaps they are allotted ten minute breaks but they return fifteen or twenty minutes later.
This to an extent hurts the employer. After all, the employee is likely being paid by the hour, or at least one can break any salary down into an hourly
rate. When an employee uses some of the time he or she is supposed to work for other things, that is stealing from the employer. Some employees may not take
longer lunch or coffee breaks, but they steal time in other ways. They may make personal calls instead of doing their work. They might go to the bathroom for an
extraordinarily long time. While obviously every employee should be allowed to use the facilities, extended periods of time may mean that he or she is dawdling in the hallway rather
than coming back to work. Similarly, because so many companies no longer allow smoking in the office, cigarette breaks are often taken. The employer realizes that smokers are addicted to
