paper work. Sergeants write performance evaluations; captains respond to letter from the public and propose new programs; and even sheriffs find themselves called upon to write for new audiences (Linkins
20). Realizing that the writing process can be broken down into five steps helps to facilitate this task. Furthermore allocating sufficient time to accomplish each of the tasks ensures
that the writing project will be completed in a timely manner. For example, if a letter needs to go out in an hour, the writer might divide his/her time in
this manner: 7 minutes for answering prewriting questions, such as what is the purpose of the letter; 15 minutes for brainstorming an answer; 15 minutes for writing and organizing; 15
minutes for revising style and 7 minutes for proofreading (Linkins 20). Today, writing tasks frequently involve email and electronic delivery. With many computers, incoming mail is announced with a
bell or sound, which interrupts the user from whatever task he or she was performing. This interruptions can pull managers away from necessary work, distract from telephone conversations and easily
becomes a major irritant and stress-producer (Sewell 11). The same time-management practices that have been applied to the telephone can also be applied to email. In the interest of effective
time management, many managers have learned to return calls only during specific periods of the day (Sewell 11). Email can be handled in a similar manner. First of all,
