, Inc. by K. Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction The Army has to be able to manage time efficiently,
and it also has to be able to count on every soldier to be ready to carry out the mission. This paper considers time management in the Army, and the
effect of unpreparedness on an individual and on the mission. Discussion We begin with time management. Civilian companies have been concerned with time management for decades; there used to be
things called "time and motion" studies in which observers watched to see how long it took people to do their assigned tasks! Fortunately, the days of stop watches and clipboards
are over, but it is still important for any organization to manage its time wisely. In the Army, time management is discussed in Field Manual 7-0, Training the Force. The
manual states that the purpose of time management is "to achieve and sustain technical and tactical competence and maintain training proficiency within the Band of Excellence" (Training the Force, 2002,
p. 4-9). The Army uses time management systems to "identify, focus, and protect prime time training periods and the resources to support the training so subordinate organizations are able to
concentrate on mission essential training" (Training the force, 2002, p. 4-9). That is, it manages time so that people can get the necessary training at the proper time. The Army
uses a "Green-Amber-Red time management system"; the colors apparently have little or nothing to do with the international situation but are merely a familiar means of indicating the focus of
