The following paper offers up a hypothetical situation wherein a time capsule is found from both the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. The paper divides the two periods and discusses findings associated with art, architecture, philosophy, literature and music. Time Capsule: Renaissance Two things that could be found in such a time capsule, regarding art, and coming from the Renaissance period, could be a piece of Michelangelos Sistine Chapel and Phidias Titians sculpture Virgin Received into Heaven. They are both pieces that truly offer up some image of religion, but also pieces that reflect more of a sense of humanity than a simple adoration. Strickland (1996) notes, in relationship to the art of this time, "art was the means to explore all facets of life on earth" (32). Guisepi (2009) indicates that the art of this time was not nearly as devotional as it was in previous times. In terms of music the time capsule could instruments such as a flute and a recorder, both of which were popular during the time. The voice was considered incredibly important but it was no longer the only powerful instrument and during the Renaissance period flutes and reed instruments were widely used. One author notes, "The basic reed instrument was the shawm. It was the most common loud band instrument, and was used for the sorts of things that brass instruments would be used for today" (Clark, 1999).
