As the war fades further into the past, its important that authors like OBrien continue to remind Americans of the difficulties and horrors of this conflict in the hope that
it will teach them to avoid such catastrophes in future. This paper concentrates on OBriens use of realism in two of his stories, "The Things They Carried" and "Days"; the
first is in the book of the same name; the second is in his first novel, If I Die in a Combat Zone. Discussion OBrien has been noted for his
use of realism and in some cases, faulted for it. This is because in The Things They Carried, he has created a character named "Tim OBrien" who served in Vietnam
and went through the same things the author OBrien did. However, the two OBriens are not the same person; the one is a "persona" created by the author to allow
him the freedom to embellish or change events to make them more exciting, or to make a point. A great many authors do this, but few give their name to
their main character. By doing so, OBrien has left himself open to charges that hes confusing some readers. However, his technique should not prove a stumbling block if readers understand
there is a difference between OBrien the character and OBrien the author. The problem comes because the two went through the same things. This is the heart of the book
