men at a turning point in their lives. They are becoming men and learning valuable lessons, perhaps lessons they will never truly understand. Both stories are personal stories from the
past of the authors and as such are very real. However, it is not always enough for the story to be real. It often requires the use of literary devices
to bring stories to life and make them valid and believable. In these two stories the authors primary use the literary devices of paradox and irony and both stories almost
present the reader with the opposite of what one would expect. The following paper examines how the two stories do this and thus become believable. On the Rainy
River In this story the man tells us that he has not told this story to anyone and he has always been embarrassed by the thought of his actions. He
tells us he had always felt that "If the stakes ever became high enough- If the evil were evil enough, if the good were good enough" he would step up
and be a hero (OBrien). He continues with his story and allows us to see into his brain as he is avoiding the draft and the Vietnam War. He runs
and hides and works for a man who never questions him, and he is torn terribly with his emotions because he wants to run and yet he cannot. He wants
to kill himself and yet he cannot. He knows he will be a coward. The point is that in being a coward he would be going to war, not running
away. This theme builds as the author uses this paradox, that war is cowardice and running is being a hero. When we think of war we think of heroes.
