OBriens war fiction, such as The Things They Carried, points out that there is a major fallacy in this sort of "true" war story, which is that war does
not make sense. OBriens narrative style replicates the fractured perception of veterans. His fiction has the same basic thematic content as all modern war stories (i.e. war is hell)
but rather than tell the reader that a mans thought processes will never be the same. OBrien blurs the edges between fiction and reality (Chen 73). The main character
in The Things They Carried, for example, is named Tim OBrien, but OBrien (the author) is quite clear that this is a work of fiction. The narrative does not follow
a linear timeline, but rather jumps around. In this manner, OBriens style is similar to stream of consciousness writing in that it mirrors the thoughts of the protagonist. Tim OBrien
(the character) has memories that he very much does want to recall. It takes a great deal of psychic energy not to think about something and this is quite obvious
from the text. However, the traumatic experiences that torture him do come out, but, they do so slowly, in bits and pieces. Sometimes stories will be abandoned before reaching a
conclusion, only to be taken up again in a few pages or chapters later (Calloway 249). Additionally, there are times when the narrator will begin a story, only
