Tillie Olsens short story "I Stand Here Ironing" has been published in numerous formats. The first publication was in her 1961 book
"Tell Me a Riddle". Today, however, the story is found in a variety of other print sources as well as on the World Wide Web. The story is
interesting in a number of respects. Olsen weaves a literary web which is replete with symbolism, symbolism which in many ways suggests aspects not only of the authors own
life interwoven with those of the characters in the story. This paper will analyze the thesis:
"the ironing board and the act of ironing symbolize the mother looking back at the past and also the future of her daughters life"
Through the act of ironing the young and inexperienced mother of this story works through the painful and deplorable
circumstances of her life and contemplates how those circumstances has and will impact the life of her daughter.
BODY "I Stand Here Ironing" relates the several facts which are pertinent to the daughters life. The poverty of
the depression era has wielded its impact on the mother and her young daughter who moves through the one temporary home after another, for the most part feeling unloved and
