is a three terminal device, consisting of an anode, cathode and gate, which can be represented in the circuit symbol by the anode and cathode opposite one another, and the gate to the side. The anode is seen at the top of the symbol, and a line leads vertically down from it to a triangle pointing downwards: another vertical line then leads from the point of the triangle to the cathode. There is a horizontal line which lies across the point of the triangle, and a line then leads from this to the left, which is seen terminating at the gate. The thyristor is also known as a silicon-controlled rectifier, or SCR, and can be described as a semi-conductor device rather like a diode, but with an extra terminal which is used to turn it on. Semiconductors are components which make use of the properties of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, and conduct through solid-state rather than vacuum. Conduction takes place through the impurities in the crystalline structure of the material. Once the thyristor is switched on, it continues to conduct whilst there is current present: once the current is no longer there, the thyristor will switch off. It consists of four layers, each layer being alternate N or P material. N (negative) semiconductors are those which have an excess of free electrons, and P (positive) semiconductors contain holes. These holes in the lattice of the crystal react to any change in electronic field in the same way that positively-charged free ...
